Friday, September 18th, the Village will be completing traffic control improvements at the intersection of 127th Street and 248th Avenue. The existing “one way” stop will be converted to an “all way” stop. New stop signs, stop bars, and warning flashers/flags will be installed to alert motorists of this change. While some additional traffic congestion may occur along 127th Street, the new stop conditions will improve the overall safety of the intersection. Additionally, the installation of new traffic signals at the intersection in the near future should resolve potential traffic congestion issues. Construction of the new signals has already started and they are scheduled to be operational by the end of this year. If you have questions about this project, please contact the Public Works Department at (815) 436-3577.

Edward Hospital identifies about two to three cases of Legionnaires’ disease in a given year, and they’ve had three in the last month. Fortunately, Legionnaires’ disease is not spread from person-to-person contact. The disease can be hard to diagnose because its symptoms are like many other forms of pneumonia.

Signs of the disease can include:

High fever

Chills

Cough

Some people may also suffer from muscle aches and headaches.

Chest X-rays are needed to find the pneumonia caused by the bacteria, and other tests can be done on sputum (phlegm), as well as blood or urine to find evidence of the bacteria in the body. Symptoms usually begin 2 to 14 days after being exposed to the bacteria.

Legionnaires’ disease can be very serious and can cause death in up to 5% to 30% of cases. Most cases can be treated successfully with antibiotics [drugs that kill bacteria in the body], and healthy people usually recover from infection.

Find more information about Legionnaires’ disease at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The west leg of Renwick Road, beginning at Illinois Route 59 and extending 200 feet to the west, will be closed to all through traffic beginning Wednesday, August 19th at 6:00 a.m. and continuing through Monday, August 24th at 6:00 a.m.

This road closure will allow for the expedited reconstruction of the intersection in conjunction with the Illinois Route 59 reconstruction project. The closure also allows this portion of the intersection to be constructed all at once, thus improving overall project quality.

Detour signs will be posted while the work is being performed. The posted detour route will utilize Fraser Road and River Road. The work is being done by Walsh Construction as part of the Illinois Route 59 reconstruction project.

For additional information, please contact: Greg Heiden, Transportation Engineer, Plainfield Public Works Department at (815) 436-3577.

Tom Hernandez, a Plainfield dad, communications director for the Plainfield public schools and columnist for the Plainfield Sun, shares parenting insights in his recently released collection of essays, “Chocolate Cows and Purple Cheese.”

From Amazon:

LIFE IS RARELY AS BLACK AND WHITE AS IT SEEMS.

Real life, not reality television life, is lived on the “homefront” – that area of 1,000 shades of gray stretching from the dinner table to the workplace and everywhere in between – colored by joy, sadness, certainty, doubt, conflict and communion.

As individuals, citizens, parents, spouses, siblings, family and community members we wonder what to think and do about the issues that life presents day to day, sometimes even minute to minute. Then we wonder again if what we thought and did was really the right thing. And so it goes…

This mental, spiritual, emotional and social tug-of-war can be at turns funny, frustrating and fulfilling. But it is never dull.

“Chocolate Cows and Purple Cheese” is a collection of essays written by a typical suburban husband and father, delving into life in all of its myriad facets.

These essays reflect on topics like aging; politics and patriotism; the adventures and challenges of parenting; marriage; death; faith and religion; and family life with a sense of honesty, candid exploration, wit, exasperation and even a slight hint of appreciation for the daily grind we all endure – and if we are really lucky, survive with a smile.
