Six District 202 middle school students helped their traveling softball team clinch a national championship this summer.

The Stone City Sharks traveling softball team won the 12-and-under “A” North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) National Championship tournament, which was played July 22-25, 2010.

The Sharks include Indian Trail Middle School eighth grader Michaela Schlattman and seventh grader Samantha Sabor; Aux Sable Middle School eighth grader Jordan Harbacek and sixth grader Kayla Curbis; Timber Ridge Middle School eighth grader Gretchen Egly and Richard Ira Jones Middle School seventh grader Allison Lindroth.

At the NAFA national tournament in Eagan, Minnesota, the girls won all eight of their games against teams from across the country, to capture the first place title.

The win completed their season where they went 57-19 and won three additional tournament championships.

The Stone City Sharks is a traveling tournament softball team whose home field is in Minooka. The girls are coached by Joe Findlay, whose own daughters now play softball for the Chicago bandits.

Each year, softball players from around the area try out to capture a spot on the Stone City traveling softball teams. For more information on the teams, visit www.sharkssoftball.net.
