Six People Left Homeless After Friday Night Fire Badly Damages House

A family of six was left homeless Friday night after a fire destroyed most of their Plainfield home, Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said.

Investigators were still on the scene early Saturday morning trying to determine the cause of the fire at 25030 W. Kay Drive, which started in the home’s attached garage and worked its way into the walls and roof, Stratton said.

The fire was first spotted shortly after 9:30 p.m. by two young girls, ages 5 and 10, who observed smoke coming out of the electrical outlets and alerted their grandparents and mother, all of whom reside at the house, he said. The older couple’s son was not at home at the time of the fire.

Although the fire started in the garage and destroyed a vehicle, it’s not believed the blaze has any connection to the recent string of arson fires on Hazelwood Drive, Stratton said.

Damage is estimated at about $60,000.

No injuries were reported but the two girls were treated on the scene for minor smoke inhalation, he said.

Plainfield had about 48 firefighters on the scene, with assistance from the Oswego, Channahon, Troy and Minooka fire departments. It took about 15 minutes to get the fire under control.

Man Totals Car in Collision with Tree, Officials Say

An 18-year-old Naperville man who plowed his car into a tree on U.S. 30 near 127th Street Thursday afternoon was lucky to walk away from the crash, Plainfield Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Jon Stratton said.

“I don’t know how he was even able to get out of the car” given how badly damaged the vehicle was, he said.

The driver’s name was not released by Illinois State Police District 5 because the report was not finalized as of Friday afternoon, but he was able to walk and his injuries were non-life threatening, Sgt. R. Case said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, and police are investigating whether a medical condition could have played a role, Case said.

The driver was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Kevin Sings the News: ‘Happy Trails’

This is the final installment of Kevin Sings the News. And we’re going to let it speak for itself.

But before we go, we want to thank you, the loyal viewers who came back week after week, enjoyed this feature, and told your friends. We’re proud of it, and very grateful to you for supporting something so different. And all of us here at Patch thank our once-and-forever troubadour, Kevin Trudo, for making us laugh and making us think, week in and week out.

The last song is called “Happy Trails.” (And yes, Kevin really did lose his voice. Thanks to Ron Donavon for pitching in.) The lyrics are listed below for your enjoyment. For more on Kevin Trudo, check out his Facebook page. And for the last time, thanks for watching.

Happy Trails

There’s a trail in life
That you take until it ends
Or meets anther trail that goes trailing into mystery
As that trail unfolds
into what the new trail holds
We can curse the path we’re on or take the trail as long as it goes
And bravely brave the cold…

So, so long, Patch
We’ve had a couple laughs
Sometimes I laughed with you, sometimes I laughed at

So take ‘er easy, Pardner
I’m sure we’ll meet again
Down some lonesome Friday morning I’m sure you’ll hear me sing

For 37 weeks now
I’ve lit a shiny light
I’ve lit up truth and justice
to guide you through the night

I’ve lit up our goodness
And the dark that lives inside
And realized that people do some strange things with their time

People drive into houses
And a lot of people fight
Though I won’t sing it weekly I’m sure they’ll keep that torch alight

Some people do some great things
They help their neighbors out
I hope that you’ll still notice without me here to sing about.

So, so long, Patch
We’ve had a couple laughs
Sometimes I laughed with you, sometimes I laughed at

So take ‘er easy, Pardner
I’m sure we’ll meet again
Down some lonesome Friday morning I’m sure you’ll hear me sing
